Blog Tour #Review and #Giveaway – Fool School by James Comins

Title:Fool School

Author:James Comins

Genre:Historical, gay romance, young adult

Publisher:Wayward Ink Publishing

In the year of our Lord 1040, fourteen-year-old aspiring jester Tom is en route to Bath to begin his studies in the art of being a Fool, following in the footsteps of his father, and his father before him.

Along the way he meets Malcolm, a fire-haired boy with eyes green as forest glass. A Scotsman who’s escaped from the ravages of the usurper Macbeth, Malcolm elects to join Tom at school. Though the journey to Bath is hazardous, it pales in comparison to what they face at the austere and vicious Fool School, where all is not as it seems. A court jester must aim to be the lowest rung on the ladder of life, and the headmaster will not abide pride.

As they journey through life’s hardships together, Tom and Malcolm find they only have each other to depend upon.

I don’t even know where to begin with this story. I should probably say I loved it, but that can’t really cover it. It was a complicated journey taking me from compassion, to amusement, to horror, and then making me melt at the absolute sweetness of Tom and Malcolm’s relationship.

This was my very first historical young adult novel in the gay romance genre and I did not know what to expect, not really. Tom’s voice is gripping and you just want to know what will happen next, even if you want to yell at him to react differently. The realities of their world are simple and scary at the same time, the main character’s adolescent age being a strange mix of horrific happenings and child-like innocence.

I was looking forward to discovering the actual Fool School, wondering what they might learn there. Needless to say I was surprised. I could have never imagined it as it was, and although the synopsis hinted at what was to come, it still shocked and angered me. If I got there by some miracle, to retrace Tom and Malcolm’s steps, there would have been some serious ass kicking involved.

Regardless of my need to protect and avenge them here and there, the way these two found comfort in each other, how they clung to the other, seeking love and understanding was beyond touching. A great story that’s definitely worth reading!
