“Do not turn your back on Tannerian Wulfric, unless you like it rough. Men like him do not surrender—they avenge.”
Synopsis – Broken in Silence by Katze Snow
Darkness is a pleasure…
Tannerian Wulfric is a leader—a strong alpha who bows to no-one, especially those who try to undermine his authority.
When an opportunity arises, he grabs it with both hands and lets nothing get in his way. Trouble is, his brother has been caught in the crossfire of his glorious retribution, and Tanner is in need of assistance.
For many years, Alex Jonas has lived his life in peace. But when fate lands him in the hands of his ex-lover and alpha, he finds himself in the centre of a feud he never knew existed, and must immerse himself in ways he’d never imagined. One chance encounter, one night, and everything comes crashing down around him. Alex must fight for his life while Tanner fights for one thing and one thing only—vengeance, which has never tasted sweeter.
Can Tanner avenge his family’s death without spilling more blood? Or will his inner demon tear apart everything he has worked for, and lose the man who owns his heart?
Warning: Contains strong use of language, violence, and graphic, erotic scenes which will require a glass of water and a fan to cool yourself down. Proceed with caution!
Broken in Silence by Katze Snow is a promising debut to a dark and steamy hot paranormal series. Tanner, the leader of the Underworld, and his former lover, Alex, have an understated romance, that seems to play side kick to the more mainstream, paranormal adventure in this series. This is a story of revenge, of conflict between opposing views on life, of obsession in its many forms, and–what makes it even spicier–it’s a story of self discovery.
What I loved about this story the most is that the Zion faction and the Underworld are not clear-cut good vs. evil. There’s so much gray to go around and make this story interesting. While the main villain is barely there, apart form the book’s start, the mere idea of him showing up blows the seeming balance off.
Tanner is dark and not particularly kind, consumed by his own real and imagined demons. He’s dedicated to his quest for revenge, which eats up his time and resources, while stead leading his Underworld with enough force and firmness to make everyone tremble.
Alex seems nothing more than a tool to him, at first. Someone who he enjoys, or enjoyed in the past, and who can play the role Tanner needs him to. The real feelings they harbor for one another are slowly revealed, making the subdued romantic plot fit like a glove.
The paranormal world where werewolves, vampires, mages, and demons share is revealed to the reader bit by bit. There’s no intentional world building, we just discover more of it as the characters act and move within it. It feels natural, as all characters are familiar with their world. There’s no outsider to explain it to, so this was a great choice in my opinion.
If you like your paranormal and romance on the darker side, with a touch of fantasy–because who doesn’t need some magic?– you will definitely enjoy this story.
