Review: Something Like Summer (Something Series #1) by Jay Bell

Title:Something Like Summer

Series:Something Series

Author:Jay Bell

Genre:Gay Romance

Love, like everything in the universe, cannot be destroyed. But over time it can change.

The hot Texas nights were lonely for Ben before his heart began beating to the rhythm of two words; Tim Wyman. By all appearances, Tim had the perfect body and ideal life, but when a not-so-accidental collision brings them together, Ben discovers that the truth is rarely so simple. If winning Tim’s heart was an impossible quest, keeping it would prove even harder as family, society, and emotion threaten to tear them apart.

Something Like Summer is a love story spanning a decade and beyond as two boys discover what it means to be friends, lovers, and sometimes even enemies.

Something Like Summer

I started this book with a lot of reservations. My first impressions was this was going to be a rather primitive and juvenile story. But I was so very wrong. This is a creatively in-depth journey into love, growth and learning how to live with others and one’s self.

Ben is a complicated but insecure young man who only wants to find someone to accept and love him for who he is. Tim is a handsome young man who doesn’t know who he is, but is starved for love which he tries to find with all the wrong people. When a poorly thought out plan for a little payback goes terribly wrong, it sets both young men down a path that leads them through many peaks and valleys over the next twelve years.

The way that author Jay Bell spins this tale is breathtaking and heart wrenching. Watching these two’s relationship blossom was amazing. When fate drives them apart Ben finds the second love of his life in the form of an older man named Jace. Ben finally finds his footing in life. Then from the pain of the past walks in Tim, his first love. When jealousy, insecurities and unrelinquished lives comes into play Ben’s torn between the past and the present, and on the line is his future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book and look forward to reading and reviewing the following books.

Keep your eyes open for this writer, he’s definitely someone you will fall in love with.

Something Series

One of the most interesting things about the first three books in the series is that they tell the same story, but from the point of view of each of the characters. The books in first half of the series are:

Book 1: Something Like Summer
Book 2: Something Like Winter
Book 3: Something Like Autumn

About the author

Jay Bell never gave much thought to Germany until he met a handsome foreign exchange student. At that moment, beer and pretzels became the most important thing in the world. After moving to Germany and getting married, Jay found himself desperate to communicate the feelings of love and alienation that surrounded this decision. He’s been mashing laptop keyboards ever since.

Jay is a Lambda Literary Award winner and a fairly bad dancer. He also thinks that you’re really cool. Seriously.

Reviewer at EyesOnBooks
Hi all. I'm B.L. Mathis and I am an vicious consumer of books. Because of my life as a mild mannered rancher in Texas, I love the escape books offer. Also I am a published author of a number of articles on different aspects of ranching. I am a sucker for a good old-fashioned love story, regardless of species or which world they are from.
