Review
I have to confess I am a fan of retellings, although I tend to go for those for adults, of the darker variety – think Snowman and the Huntsman or the scary Red Riding Hood versions. I was however quite curious to see how a transgender retelling of a classic tale would work. To me, making a point, showing how difficult life can be, yet instilling hope in kids is a difficult task for any witer.
With Snow White & the Seven Angels, Rhys Ethan managed to keep key elements of the classic tale, while adding new challenges and characters that help shape up the life of Snow White in her journey to accepting her true self. I liked the transformation of dwarfs into angels, the role the fairy godmother still plays, the introduction of the prince, and the final revelation of the mother’s true self.
The story kept the balance between struggles – being shunned for who you are, rejected by family, friends, and random people who hardly know you, the self-doubt – White’s fear that she will forever be trapped in a boy’s life, that she will never be loved – and the positive messages that need to be present in a story for children – hope, acceptance, the idea that you don’t have to do it all alone. All in all, a quick, fun read, and quite a different tale to the classic we all know.
