Review of Stories Included

Mix ‘N’ Match is exactly what it promises to be – an interesting collection of interracial stories that looks at this types of relationships from many different, yet always revealing perspectives. From trying to conform and hiding who you are, to dealing with people reacting badly to what you look like, to fighting to belong in worlds that always reject you, and lastly, to finding love, despite all the hardships. Read on to find out a bit about every story in this anthology, except–as always–for my own. You’ll have to read other reviews to get an idea on that one 😀

Sage never imagined a trip down south would lead to so many discoveries.

He also never expected to meet Eugene, who is as different from Sage as north from south.

Two young men from different backgrounds.

Can they find friendship and love while surrounded by those who consider their desires to be forbidden?

Sage and Eugene’s story was a heartbreaking one about race and hate dividing people and making some feel so unwanted and wrong, that they hide who they are, or they leave their families behind and move all the way to more accepting areas. On the background of nasty looks, bruised up faces, and fear, Sage and Eugene find love, trust, and hope for a future together.

Through The Front Door

A front door could be many things:

Hope, fear, a fresh start, a cold expanse of nothingness.

What will Thomas Ng’s front door mean for Daniel Grimm?

Eddy LeFey’s story happens during a fan meet and greet in Montreal.  Fanboys Daniel and Thomas have been online friends for a long time, but there is some attraction that Daniel feels as well. His first time meeting Thomas in real life works out for the best, despite his being outed by his suddenly ex-boyfriend. Amidst hard conversations with family members and an outpour of support, Daniel has to figure out what his future is going to look like.

Deceptive Histories

When Miguel falls for Van, he gets caught in the crosshairs of an angry spirit.

A spirit who cursed Van’s family long ago.

Can Miguel and Van break the curse?

Or will their lives end in ruin?

This story was a great mix of love, discovering your own roots, and a nit of mysticism. Two young men fall in love, while one just discovers half of his heritage, and the other denies his own. It takes a seemingly crazy woman who sees the dead, a police investigation, and a wild goose chase in Las Vegas to bring these two closer who they really are, separate and together.

Meschianza Meetings

Philadelphia, 1778
Lieutenant Penton has two problems: dealing with society functions and hiding his passion for Isaac, a slave.
When invited to assist with preparations for the Meschianza, he sees it as a brief escape from both.
However, the night will prove to have more to offer than he ever would have dreamed possible.

This historic tale pairs an Lieutenant who’s left London for American lands and a slave he meets in the household he’s assigned to live in. While preparing for a joust and party, Lieutenant Penton is gently nudged by a friendly officer to get closer to the man he secretly desire. Even if he battles his own wants and tries to dampen them with thoughts of being improper, he’s bound to lose sooner or later.

A Hopeless Mirage

After hearing “no rice” enough times, Guy decided to swear off dating apps and men, only to find himself falling for his best friend’s boyfriend.

This big misunderstanding tale was touching, funny, and endearing. The three men that have to share a house are torn apart and brought together by the changes in their lives and their own failure of communicating things properly. It takes parting gifts, tears, and incessant questions to figure this situation out.

A Touch of Paradise

Hauled to work in Hawaii, Tudor has little time to enjoy the island paradise.

His obnoxious friend Radu has it much easier, using his free time to set Tudor up, dangling a willing Hawaiian beauty in front of him.

Having been burned by long-distance relationships before, Tudor stubbornly resists Kahoni’s advances.

But can Tudor be worn down enough to enjoy a touch of paradise?

A Surprising Service

It’s another frustrating chore in Nick’s day: getting the boiler serviced.

But when Prince walks through the door, it’s not just the heating that gets hot.

This was one hot story, I tell you. Not that I expected any less after the 52 First Dates series, but you’ll be exposed to a steamy hot encounter, along with vulnerability, hope, and dreams for a romantic future. Lets just say, this will make you want to get your boiler serviced more than all those naughty movies we’ve all seen.

Sent by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to curb an outbreak of influenza in an Australian outback aboriginal community, Dr. Dan is ready for anything.

Except Tommy…

A half-caste aboriginal who feels he doesn’t belong…

Mixed-race might look beautiful to everyone, and the idea of two mixed cultures might sound intriguing. But often times, people on both sides will reject those they perceive as not their own kin. This is a beautifully told story that will break your hurt and heal it again about the sometimes difficult search for a place where one belongs.

Kiss of the South

The north and south have been divided by war. But love has other plans for Joseph Calder and Ephraim Pickett.

Ephie and Joseph bring us back to the American South with its dark history of having slaves. Unlike Asta Idonea’s story, this one focuses more about the poor treatment inflicted on those regarded as property. But even in the midst of those realities, there is room for love, hope, and a smartly crafted escape plan.

What if the man you thought you could never have was waiting for you all along?

A coffee roasting competition brings together two friends and former Mormons, currently living on different continents. The story mixes flashes of the past with what happens in the present to blend a great tale of love, friendship, and staying true to oneself.
